Weight Training

What's all that gym talk about? Push, pull, press, curl and clean! Well, you're about to become a portion of the physically-fit and verbal-elite. The following list will better enable you to chat with the big boys without feeling short of "buff" expressions:

  • ATB -abs, thighs and buns. A.K.A. job security for a personal trainer.
  • Buff - Also known as buffed. Large and muscular body. The term is usually directed towards the male gender. A female would be "Buffy".
  • Cardio - Formally known as cardiovascular training or aerobic conditioning.I think people are so out of breath while performing this type of exercise, it's just easier to say "cardio".
  • Drop sets - Start with a heavy weight and execute the movement till failure, then lowering the weight and repeat again.
  • Meat head -Same as buff, but much less grey matter.
  • Pumped up- The point were your back and chest are to filled with blood they don't allow your arms to hang vertically.
  • Pyramid set Starting with a low weight and progressing to a heavy weight then returning to a light weight. Used to more completely exhaust the muscle.
  • Rezzy - New years resolutionist who swears to adhere to a strict health and fitness program but is never seen again after March15th or so.
  • Super set - Using two exercises back and forth to work the muscle from different angles and develop it more completely. Example: bench press and dumbbell flies. One of my clients calls these "power hits". He definitely spent too much time in the 60's.
  • Nautilus man/woman - This person will only workout on machines because they have seen those "people" on TV who are so grossly muscular they can't even comb their hair. Nautilus people feel this dreaded fate can only be avoided by steering clear of the free weight room.
  • Negatives - This is a nice way of saying "PAIN". It's the portion of the movement in which the muscle is elongating back to a relaxed position. It should be done slowly for maximum benefit as this is where most muscle soreness and development takes place.
  • Sleeper - One of those people who reads a book while doing leg extensions with five pounds while three people are waiting.
  • Fountain - Certainly not the one you drink from! This is the sweaty person who refuses to bring a workout towel to the gym and uses the prone leg curl machine as a slip and slide.
  • Versa-climber - Probably one of the most effective pieces of aerobic training equipment in your fitness center. It just happens to be the least used. Could this be because you actually have to work on it?

Well, there you have it. The essentials to get any hardbody through their first day at the gym. Happy Lifting!
