Jermyn, Kevin - NCAA All-American

Reprinted from:

Name:  Kevin Jermyn

Event(s): 1500, mile, 3000

PR's:  3:43.50 for 1500 meters

Brief Bio:  Born in Staten Island, NY.  Three time National High School Champion while at Tottenville High School.  All-American at Georgetown University.   Currently compete for Reebok Enclave in Washington, DC.

Questions:

1. What are some of your goals for the upcoming year?

To find out how far I can go in this sport.  My main two goals are to qualify in the 1500 meters for the Olympic trials (3:40.50) and to break 4-minutes for the mile.   The 1500 at the Trials always seems to be wide open, so I just want to focus on making the final and then see what happens.  Other then that, I just want to compete in big meets and see what I can do.

2. What are some of your plans for the upcoming year to reach those goals?

From January through March, I will focus on endurance training and some speed work, mainly tempo's and intervals though.  I am not going to run many indoor races, will begin the outdoor season probably in late April or early May.  I will focus on my speed work in races then (run lots of 800's) while still doing quite a bit of strength work in practice.  In May and June I will focus my training more on speedwork.  Then in June I hope to run a fast 1500 to get my qualifying time for the Trials.

3. What is (are) your favorite workout(s)?

Really depends on the time of year.  During the precompetition phase, I really like to do mid-range intervals (1000's, 1200's).  During the competition phase, I really enjoy doing speed endurance type workouts (fast 500's and 600's)

4. What factors do you attribute to your success?

Motivation to reach my potential in something that God blessed me with some talent.  I don't know how fast my body is capable of running, and this unknown is what motivates me.

Great training partners and support have also helped a great deal.   Having someone there to push myself to the limit on hard days is important, as well as someone to get me off the couch on the bad days.

5. What is your training philosophy?

Train smart and hard.  Each day in training has a specific goal.   Pay attention to that goal and stick with it.  For instance if you are supposed to run easy today since you ran hard yesterday, go easy today.  If you are supposed to run intervals today, then run the intervals at the appropriate intensity, don't race yourself everytime you workout.  Save the racing for races.

6. Do you have any advice that may help other runners reach their potential?

Start with a goal.  Then develop a plan to reach that goal.   Stick with that plan but listen to your body.  If you feel an injury coming on, use caution.  If you are feeling great, push a little harder.  When you are having trouble finding the motivation to train one day, remember your goal and what it will take to reach that goal.  Most likely it doesn't involve siting on your sofa watching the television.

Best of luck.
