Questions:

1. What are some of your goals for the upcoming year?

After two down years, my goal is to return to consistently performing in the 1500 at the world class level. Specifically, making the U.S. Olympic team and making the finals in the 1500 in Sydney.

2. What are some of your plans for the upcoming year to reach those goals?

I will concentrate on strength and flexibility so that I can train daily on a high level without injury. Throughout the winter and early spring, I will concentrate on my base and aerobic capacity (i.e. 5k, 10k pace intervals, tempos, etc.). Early to mid spring, I plan on competing often without backing off the mileage and strength training. Late spring will consist of more 1500/800 type training and resting more for big meets so that I am sharp for the Olympic Trials.

3. What is (are) your favorite workout(s)?

Anything anaerobic. I love doing "time trial " type workouts or "all-out" intervals with full recovery.  Although I know this type of training is not the most beneficial to a distance runner all the time, I enjoy these workouts most.

4. What factors do you attribute to your success?

Persistence during tough times and self-discipline. Also, excellent coaching.

5. What is your training philosophy?

I believe that, on the elite level, most runners can get to the 1200   (in a 1500m race) together. It is the athlete that is the strongest, not the fastest, that will win the race. I believe training cycles should incorporate all energy systems once every 10 days.
(Aerobic, anaerobic threshold, anerobic, etc.) This will maintain and improve strength while maintaining the athlete's speed.

6. Do you have any advice that may help other runners reach their potential?

Have patience and persistence. Also the communication between athlete and coach is crucial. Athletes should make sure that he/ she is on the same page w/ his or her coach regarding, training, goals etc.
