Sloan, Chuck - 1999 US World Univ. Games team

Name: Chuck Sloan

Event: Steeple/mile

Brief Bio: From Billings, Montana. Starting running as a junior in high school. Attending Oklahoma State University. 3 time All-American. Made US National team for the 1999 World University Games in the Steeple.

Questions:

One of the big goals for the upcoming year is to make the US national team for the 2000 Olympics. Realistically, I would like to have a strong showing in the US trials. Win NCAA's in the steeple. Make All-American in Cross Country.

I'm trying to run a few more miles to add to my base but it is really hard with the collegiate schedule. I want to improve the intensity of my hard workout days.

One of my favorite workouts is 2 sets of 8x300 with 4 minutes between sets and 30 sec rest in-between. During that 30 sec you must jog 100 meters. It makes you really concentrate like long intervals but you get some decent speed at the same time.

I also like this workout we do in cross country where we run a 2 mile then rest 14 minutes then run another mile. (8:56/4:09)

I have a pretty strong work ethic. I feel like if I work harder and smarter than everyone else I will win. I also believe that there is a point where you can work too hard. I think I have the ability to race smarter than most guys.

My training philosophy is pretty normal hard on the hard days, easy on the easy days. One long run a week, and two to three hard workouts mixed in there.

am pm
s 1 1/2 hr to 2 hr long run
m 3 intervals or threshold run
t 3 9
w 3 intervals
t 3 9
f 9
s race or intervals

At the same time, after long runs 6-8 stride outs and hurdle drills 2-3 times/week

This is different in Cross season, we run a 10 mile threshold run on Tues. and sat, a hard hilly 8 miler on Thurs., and long on sun. Then we move into the before stated phase of training after about 6-8 weeks of base work. I believe in the pyramid type training with a big base and tapering for competition.

My advice: if it hurts when you run, don't run!
