The Hennipen Canal was built at the turn of the twentieth century as a commercial waterway connecting the Rock River with the main line of the Hennepin Canal. 155 miles long approximately 96 miles can be navigated by boaters and canoers. 28 mile bike trail from Rock Falls to Lock #33.

The State Park comprises of about 1700 acres, 900 of which are designated wetland. We have 10 miles of hiking and biking trails and a natural, inland glacial lake loaded with fish. Or, you can fish in the Fox River. We also have two dedicated nature preserves.

This is a 20 mile long nature trail with railroad ballast surface. It is a serene spot for hiking, mountain biking, horseback riding, and cross-country skiing. The Path features a 250 foot double span trestle bridge across the Pecatonica River. Several tall grass prairie areas are maintained along the trail. Picnic and playground areas are available at Sumner Park in Pecatonica, and there are covered rest tables west of Pecatonica. Trail maps are available.

North section 7.5 miles begins at WI state line goes to Ringwood, this section is original ballast and will require mountain bikes. South section 4.5 miles begins in Crystal Lake and runs to the Kane Co. line, this section is asphalt, a person can travel from WI state line, south to Kane Cnty line, connect with the Fox River Trail and continue on to the IL Prairie Path,total 120+ miles. Trail is used for biking, hiking, horse back riding, cross country skiing & snowmobiling (if 4+" of snow).

The McHenry County Prairie Trail - North Extension features 7.5 miles of gravel trail. Extends from Barnard Mill Road in Ringwood to the Wisconsin border in Richmond. Hiking, biking (off-road recommended) & horseback riding are common here. Snowmobiling is permitted when there are 4 or more inches of snow. Parking is located in Glacial Park off of Rt 31 along Harts Rd. Call for information - 815/678-4431.
